Hope Amidst Hate
Hope Amidst Hate was the byproduct of a turbulent time in my life. I wouldn’t call it my strongest poem, nor does it have a place among the my favourite pieces ever written, but it remains relevant to date. The version on my blog was reworked several years ago, so it differs from the one I originally posted on Instagram.
We live in a world where extremism and hate have become the norm in most online spaces—a time where empathy and kindness are often scorned, but to forego compassion and lead a life of self-centredness is beyond me.
There are times when the hatred you see or experience firsthand becomes too much to bear, but I urge you, dear reader, to never abandon that hope for a better tomorrow. The world may laugh at you and call you foolish for daring to dream, but when you find yourself stranded in a sea of never-ending darkness and despair, that flame of hope will be the light that guides you home.Â
Hope Amidst Hate
In troubled times as these, we hope for love to bear us through
fire, brimstone, hail, tempest, downpour and deluge too.
It comes in the form of routine and religion, gentle song or hymn forlorn,
poetry spun from flaxen dreams and art splattered on the linen walls
of a lonesome heart falling apart.
Makeshift creators are what we are,
creating to dispel this weary world of hate,
and though we cannot change the course of fate,
we hope amidst hate.
And there shall come a day when
the beating of our hearts begins to cease
and we lose sight of our dreams, set adrift on stormy seas.
But on that day hope shall return – never too early nor too late.
Human as we are, we hope and hope for better days,
for this is all we have, and so,
we hope amidst hate.
